Approximate travel times from Brisbane. Expect delays around Brisbane during peak periods including the weekends.

There are a few paid and free car parks in Hervey Bay, and you could take a chance and try for a free park by the Frasher Island River Barge at River Heads (Mary River mouth). If stopping in Maryborough, 30 km upstream, maybe consider Maryborough Towing for short term car storage.

Public transport options

Translink Sunshine Coast Line has regular services to Landsborough and Nambour, with a couple of services each day going to Gympie.

There are buses connecting both Nambour or Landsborough to Maleny and Maryborough to Hervey Bay. Queensland Rail RailBus also services Hervey Bay if you are taking the train.

QLD Rail Tilt train runs between Brisbane to Rockhampton five times a week, with connecting buses between Gympie amd Gympie North, as well as Hervey Bay and Maryborough.

Connecting buses leave Sovereign Cinema at Gympie leave about 30 min before the train, and Hervey Bay transit centre at Pialba about 1 hr 30 min before the train arrives at Maryborough.

Greyhound Buses service the areas north of Gympie. As of May 2024, there were three services daily.
