Major Tributaries

The Bogan actually joins the Barwon just a few kilometres upstream of the Culgoa and Barwon confluence that marks the start of the Darling River.

The Balonne (Minor) River and another creek forms at the Bokhara River that flows south to the Barwon. The Birrie River is a major distributary and Cato Creek joins it just before the confluence with the Barwon.

Macquarie River is the ninth or tenth longest river in the country at about 882 km. High flows often get absorbed by the Macquarie Marshes just before the river meets the Barwon.

The Namoi River flows from western slopes of the Moonbi Range at the convergence of the Macdonald River and Boundary Creek and is joined by twenty-seven named tributaries on its way to the Barwon.

The Castlereagh, Macquarie and Bogan rivers run "more or less parallel" across the rich soils of the alluvial plains.

The Gwydir River has an undefined path through the wetlands and floodplains west of Moree and it rarely reaches the Barwon outside of flood events. Some of its waters reach the Barwon via the Mehi River.

Moonie (Mooni) River basin is relatively flat and lacks any significant features of note.

The Weir, Macintyre, Dumaresq, Severn are collectively known as the Border Rivers.

Part of the river course marks the boundary between QLD and NSW.
